Yummy Mummies

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Being a parent is an exhausting business and it is not always easy to find time to cook or eat properly!  Often it’s easier to grab convenience food and this is not always the best option for keeping you fit and healthy. Celebrity Mums and media also add to the pressure to be back into your pre-pregnancy clothes as soon as possible. All this added pressure to look your best, whilst taking care of a child, can prove to be difficult. Many celebrities have their own chefs and caterers to cook their meals for them, a luxury many of us don’t have! It is hard work looking after a child and you’ll need to keep your energy levels up even if you are desperate to get back into your pre-pregnancy clothes.

How to keep your energy levels up…..

  • Small regular meals will keep up energy levels and keep your metabolism ticking over
  • Keep the fruit bowl well stocked for a quick fix
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help from a friend or family. Maybe they could prepare a few meals you can freeze and eat when you’re ready
  • Stock up on healthy cereal bars, oats, raisins, soups, anything that’s quick, healthy, easy to prepare and will stop you seeking out chocolate for a sugar rush!

As long as you follow a healthy diet with gentle exercise you will loose weight gradually without even trying! It’s amazing how just making a few simple changes to your will diet can have a big effect on how you feel both inside and outside! Remember don’t be too hard on yourself, you’ve got a baby to care for and that’s not an easy task!

Topping and Tailing

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Bathing your baby everyday is not necessary until they start to be more active but keeping their face ‘topping’ and bottoms ‘tailing’ is an important part in caring for your baby and keeping them clean.

Topping and tailing can be done on a changing mat.

All you need is some cotton wool, warm water and your nappy changing bag.Topping

  • Always start at the top end first…..wash your baby’s face using water and cotton wool.
  • Always use a clean piece of cotton wool for each eye and another piece for the mouth and nose.
  • Always clean the neck and under the chin as these areas can get milky. It’s always good to remember to clean around the ears and under their arms.

Check their hands too, as long nails can harbour germs, so keep them short and clean. This will also help them avoid scratching themselves.Tailing

  • Boys and girls are obviously different in this area. When you have removed the     nappy, clean the area.

  • On a girl always clean and wipe from front to back, to avoid transferring germs from the bottom to her genital area.

  • On a boy don’t try to pull the foreskin back to clean underneath as both a baby boy’s foreskin and a baby girl’s labia are self cleansing.

After cleaning this area always ensure all the folds and creases are dried gently.

At this stage if baby is happy lying on the changing mat you could try a little baby massage or use this time to gently sing to them. Many newborn babies may cry when they are first undressed but by singing them your favourite tune and choosing a time when they’re not too tired or hungry you can make it a fun part of their daily routine.

Baby Play Time

Friday, November 30th, 2007

As soon as news of the birth of your baby is announced you can bet you’ll be given toys as gifts and you’ll probably buy a few yourself, but what toys are best?

Despite doing little else than eating and sleeping for the first few months, they are actually busy taking in everything and everyone that surrounds them- voices, noises, smells. However, a few good toys to stimulate them will be good for their development.

A few ideas on how to choose the best toy for your baby

Cot mobiles are always a favourite. Place them at the right height so they are within the baby’s vision. Many have music and plenty of pretty shapes and colours which will keep baby entertained.

Activity centres are also a good option, with many having different textures, colours, noises and things to pull, press and touch. Newborns love high-pitched sounds, so chimes and rattles are great for babies up to six months. Teething rings and soft books, building blocks or cloth skittles are good fun options.

• Mirrors are a real hit with little ones, they find looking at their own reflection fascinating, many toys include plastic mirrors.

but……… the best toy of all is you! All these toys are great and will keep baby occupied, but nothing is better than time spent with someone who loves them. This is a great opportunity to remember your nursery rhymes and sing them all your favourites, or if you’re not feeling vocal, a few funny voices combined with funny faces may produce a chuckle! Raspberries on their tummies and this little piggy on their toes is also one to try. Just have fun and your baby will too!

Always make sure though, that what you buy or gifts you are given, are recommended for your baby’s age range.
